Counseling and Psychotherapy
Counseling:
Is a short-term treatment or crisis intervention that typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months. It is primarily focused on specific challenges and often revolves around issues that arise acutely in a person's daily life. As such, counselors tend to take a more pragmatic approach than their psychotherapeutic counterparts. They aim to find solutions quickly and may offer practical advice if the client desires it.
Our counselors, having lived and worked in Japan for an extended period, have extensive experience with the challenges that expatriates often face. For this reason, we offer both individual and couples counseling. Intercultural marriages, in particular, can present unique challenges, as conflicts may arise more easily due to differences in communication styles rooted in cultural backgrounds. Read more
Psychotherapy:
Psychotherapy is a treatment that unfolds over months or even years, originating in its modern form during the fin de siècle under Sigmund Freud in Vienna, Austria.
Through psychotherapy, clients gain a profound understanding of their passions and strengths, as well as the patterns and tendencies that may be holding them back from reaching their full potential in life. In this sense, psychotherapy can be seen as a journey of self-discovery—an endeavor that, while requiring effort and resilience, is ultimately rewarding. It fosters personal growth, leading to a richer, more authentic life. As the renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm famously put it, through this process, we become ‘fully born’ as human beings.
At Refugium Tokyo we offer the following therapeutical approaches:
Client centered therapy
Cognitive behavioural therapy CBT
Schematherapy
Depth psychology
