FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is psychotherapy, and how does it work?
Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a collaborative process between a client and a trained mental health professional. It aims to help individuals understand and resolve emotional, behavioral, and psychological issues. Through various therapeutic techniques, clients explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to gain insights, develop coping strategies, and improve their overall well-being.
How do I know if I need therapy?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, struggling to cope with daily life, experiencing persistent negative emotions, or noticing changes in your behavior or relationships, it may be helpful to seek therapy. A mental health professional can provide an assessment to determine if psychotherapy is appropriate for your situation.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your individual needs and goals. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy (6–12 sessions), while others may engage in long-term therapy over several months or years. We'll regularly review your progress to ensure the therapy remains effective and aligned with your objectives.
What is the difference between Counseling and Psychotherapy?
While both terms are often used interchangably, the first one is mostly associated with a shorter, more hand on approach of the therapist, the latter with a more fundamental, deeper analysis of the underlying issues of a client. In other words Psychotherapy focuses on treating deep-seated emotional issues, often exploring past experiences. Counseling typically addresses specific life challenges in a shorter-term, solution-focused manner.
Is Psychotherapy or Counseling covered by the Japanese national health insurance?
No, counseling and psychotherapy are unfortunately not covered by Japanese health insurance. However, most private insurance plans do cover our services. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm whether our services are included in your plan, so you can make an informed decision about your options.
Do you offer a sliding scale system?
We do not operate on a sliding scale system. All our clients are charged the same standard rates, as we are committed to providing equal access to the same high-quality care and professional services for everyone. This ensures that all clients can rely on a consistent level of expertise and support, tailored to their individual needs.
Do you have experience with expats or intercultural issues ?
Absolutely. We have extensive experience working with expatriates and individuals dealing with intercultural challenges. Our therapists, having lived abroad themselves, understand the unique stressors associated with living in a different country and can help navigate issues related to cultural adjustment, identity, and cross-cultural relationships.
Do you offer Online-Therapy?
Yes, we do offer online therapy. While we recommend that at least the initial session between the counselor and client be conducted in person, we generally provide counseling and psychotherapy online. Our services are not limited to Japan and are available across different time zones (in case clients live far away from Tokyo or even outside Japan, the initial appointment can also be conducted online).
Are my conversations confidential?
We take your privacy seriously. All therapy sessions are confidential. Information shared during sessions will not be disclosed to anyone without your explicit consent, except in rare circumstances required by law (e.g., if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others).
