Expanding Mental Health Support for Tokyo's International Community
Refugium Tokyo now offers counseling and psychotherapy in English, Japanese, German — and French
Finding the right therapist can already feel challenging. Finding one who understands your language, cultural background, and life situation in Japan can be even more difficult.
At REFUGIUM Tokyo, our goal has always been to provide professional, culturally sensitive mental health care for Tokyo's international community. As our practice continues to grow, we are pleased to announce another important step in that direction.
Since July, REFUGIUM Tokyo has expanded its multilingual services and now also offers counseling and psychotherapy in French, alongside English, Japanese, and German.
This development allows us to support an even broader range of individuals, couples, and families living in Japan.
Why language matters in psychotherapy
Although many people communicate comfortably in English, psychotherapy often reaches deeper emotional levels when clients can express themselves in their native language.
Subtle emotions, personal memories, family dynamics, and cultural experiences are often easier to explore without having to translate thoughts internally.
For this reason, multilingual mental health care is not simply a convenience—it can become an important therapeutic resource.
Whether someone is facing anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship difficulties, trauma, identity questions, or challenges related to living abroad, being able to communicate naturally can make therapy feel more comfortable and effective.
An international practice for an international city
Tokyo is home to professionals, diplomats, researchers, entrepreneurs, students, and families from around the world.
Their experiences often extend beyond common mental health concerns. Many also navigate:
relocation and adjustment
intercultural relationships
workplace stress
identity development
raising children between cultures
isolation from family and support networks
These experiences benefit from therapists who understand not only psychology but also the realities of international life in Japan.
At REFUGIUM Tokyo, we strive to combine evidence-based psychotherapy with genuine intercultural understanding.
Building a multilingual team
As REFUGIUM Tokyo continues to develop, we are gradually expanding our clinical team to meet the growing needs of the international community.
Today, we are able to provide professional counseling and psychotherapy in:
English
Japanese
German
French
Each therapist contributes their own professional background and areas of expertise while sharing the same commitment to ethical practice, evidence-based treatment, and respectful, client-centered care.
This team-based approach allows REFUGIUM Tokyo to remain a stable and trusted place for psychological support while offering clients the opportunity to find a therapist who is the right fit for their individual needs.
